Many of our modern strategies to evangelize our culture rely on downplaying differences to win ourselves a hearing. We find ways to treat cohabitation and civil partnerships as a form of marriage. We try to avoid the gay debate entirely. We accept that adultery and divorce are a normal part of twenty-first century life. Anything to get ourselves a place at the discussion table. This is the exact opposite approach that which Paul takes to evangelise the city of Corinth. He obeys Solomon’s teaching in proverbs 21:22 – “A wise man attackes the city of the mighty and pulls down the stronghold in which they trust” and identifies the cities biggest idol in order to make it the focues of his attention.”
