Best piece of advice you

Best piece of advice you have received as a church planter? From John Piper – he is a greater man off the stage than on the stage. He said to me, "be a sanctified version of you". What he meant by this, is take all your strengths and weaknesses and be sanctified in all those areas. The worst thing you can do is try to be like someone else. Be yourself, but we a sanctified version of you. I regret being a loud-mouth, crass-talking person in months and years past. I am ashamed of this and now I want to be a sanctified version of me.

Paul was frequently beaten for

Paul was frequently beaten for violating cultural norms of his day, such as ending the sacrificial system and not enforcing a host of Jewish cultural customs, including circumcision, dietary restrictions and festivals. Indeed had Paul not so viciously undermined so many deeply valued cultural norms, he would have lived to a ripe old age instead of being beheaded by his angry critics

… Hospitality is not just

… Hospitality is not just hanging out with Christians. The word “hospitality” in the Bible literally means to welcome the stranger. Fellowship is when you hang out with all your Christian friends. And that’s great and it’s good and you should. Hospitality is when, in addition to your friends, you invite strangers to hang out with your friends so that they too start to become friends. That’s exactly what Jesus is talking about here. Hosting a party, hosting a banquet, hosting a feast, having a generous menu, having a generous guest list. And as we do these things, what we’re showing is something of the character of God, that we can party to the glory of God. We can have a great time and laugh deeply and eat well to the glory of God. And as we do, we’re showing something of the character of our God and something of his heavenly kingdom.

You are not an animal.

You are not an animal. You are the glory of God. You are not a pervert. You are the glory of God. You are not an addict. You are the glory of God. You are not a victim. You are the glory of God. You are not a fool. You are the glory of God. Jesus, the god-man who radiated the Father’s glory perfectly, has made it possible for you to be the glory of God. Jesus your King, Warrior, and Lord hung upon his cross in your place to atone for all of your sins, including sexual perversion (Col. 2:13-15). If you repent of your sin, Jesus will forgive you for it and cleanse you from it, thereby taking away your guilt, shame, defeat, and filth (1 John 1:9; Zech. 3:1-9).

Be very careful in church

Be very careful in church planting be careful to protect the line between work and family particularly when you are starting the church in your home. Be very discerning when you have random people hanging out at your house, and some could be previous sex offenders. Plus you also have the “What about Bob?” syndrome. There is always that one “Bob” guy in every church. Practice hospitality, but do it with great wisdom and discernment. People will molest your kids in the name of church planting.

There is a strong drift

There is a strong drift toward the hard theological left. Some emergent types want to recast Jesus as a limp-wrist hippie in a dress with a lot of product in His hair, who drank decaf and made pithy Zen statements about life while shopping for the perfect pair of shoes. In Revelation, Jesus is a prize fighter with a tattoo down His leg, a sword in His hand and the commitment to make someone bleed. That is a guy I can worship. I cannot worship the hippie, diaper, halo Christ because I cannot worship a guy I can beat up. I fear some are becoming more cultural than Christian, and without a big Jesus who has authority and hates sin as revealed in the Bible, we will have less and less Christians, and more and more confused, spiritually self-righteous blogger critics of Christianity.
