Call in help

William GurnallIf Satan continues to hound you, call in help and do not listen to the devil’s counsel to the contrary. The very strength of some temptations lies in trying to keep them hidden. Telling a trusted, godly friend of your struggles often brings relief. Satan knows this too well, so in order more freely to rifle the soul of its peace and comfort he frightens it into silence.”Oh my”, Satan says, “if your friends knew such a thing of you, they would cast you off. You had better hope they never find out!” He has kept many a poor soul in misery by swearing it to secrecy. You lose two blessing by keeping the devil’s secret – the counsel of your fellow brethren and their prayers. What a serious loss this is!

Withstanding Satan’s icy blasts

William GurnallWe have all known those who content themselves with a profession of Christ and a smattering of gifts and works, and who do not wish to know if there is more to the Christian life. They are the ones whose graces freeze when winter winds buffet their souls. But the saint whose faith has been insulated from error by the truth of the gospel will be able to withstand all Satan’s icy blasts.

Strength of Christ

William GurnallWhen he (Satan) assaults a saint, whose freedom was won at the Cross, once for all, then he is laying siege to a city with gates and bars. Sooner or later he must retreat in shame, unable to pluck the weakest saint out of the Saviour’s hand. Doubt your own strength, but never doubt Christ’s. In your gravest conflicts with Satan, trust Him to bring you out of the devil’s dominion with a high hand, in spite of all the force and fury of hell.

Filled with the Spirit or Satan

William GurnallWhat the Spirit of God does in a saint, Satan in a diabolical sense does in a sinner. The Spirit fills the heart with love, joy, holy desires; Satan fills the sinner’s heart with pride, lust, lying. And liek teh drunkard filled with wine, the sinner filled with Satan is not his own man, but an impotent slave.

One reason for delay…

William GurnallOne reason for postponing deliverance is to give your faith an opportunity to grow stronger. When a mother is teaching her child to walk, she stands back a short distance and holds out her hands to the child, beckoning him to come. Now if she exercises her strength to go to her little one, the child is ill served, for his unsteady legs are denied the practice they need. If she loves him, she will let him suffer a little at present to ensure is future health. Just so because God loves His children, He sometimes lets them struggle to strengthen the legs of their unsteady faith.

More than a nibble of peace and joy!

William GurnallYour heavenly Father is so eager to care for you, that while you are timidly asking for a nibble of peace and joy, He is longing for you to open your mouth wide so He can fill it. The more often you ask, the better; and the more you ask for, the more He welcomes you.
Go quickly now. Search your heart from one end to the other, and gather up all your weaknesses. Set them before the Almighty, as the widow placed her empty vessels before the prophet. Expect a miracle of deliverance from the limitless resources of God. If you had more vessels to bring, you could have them all filled.

Satan’s opiates

William GurnallWhat opiate does Satan sprinkle on the pillows of the unregenerate? How can they sleep so soundly even after they have been warned of the consequences of ignoring God’s gracious ultimatum? Sinner, Satan may trick you into supposing it takes wisdom or courage to refuse the terms of God’s mercy, but it is really the ultimate act of foolishness. Your eternal destiny rests with God. If you will not deal with him now, you must answer His charges later. Know this: “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God” Heb 10:31
