Despair and depression

And one thing you need to remember is that the oppressive darkness and the temptation to despair is common to man. You are not alone. About ¼ of the Psalms are written to help you. And one man’s surrender to the darkness does not at all mean that’s where you’ll end up. This precious promise is for you:

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

Call in help

William GurnallIf Satan continues to hound you, call in help and do not listen to the devil’s counsel to the contrary. The very strength of some temptations lies in trying to keep them hidden. Telling a trusted, godly friend of your struggles often brings relief. Satan knows this too well, so in order more freely to rifle the soul of its peace and comfort he frightens it into silence.”Oh my”, Satan says, “if your friends knew such a thing of you, they would cast you off. You had better hope they never find out!” He has kept many a poor soul in misery by swearing it to secrecy. You lose two blessing by keeping the devil’s secret – the counsel of your fellow brethren and their prayers. What a serious loss this is!

Dealing with fears

William GurnallIf you would argue less with Satan and pray more to God about your fears, they would soon be resolved. Can you expect truth from a liar, or comfort from an adversary? Turn your back and go to God. Try not to worry, sooner or later you will receive your certificate of assurance.

Source of power

William GurnallHow does the believer tap into his source of power? To be strong in the Lord’s might requires two acts of faith. First you must have a settled, firm persuasion that the Lord is almighty in power. This is a foundational truth. Secondly you must not only believe that God is almighty, but also that this almighty power of God is engaged for your defense. God expects you to meet every trial, every temptation, leaning on His arm.
