In Scripture a variety of language is found to describe what happenned at the cross: the cultic language of sacrifice, the payment of ransom, punishment and acquittal and that of victory. In these instances, the meaning of ‘Christ died for our sins’ is presented as an offering, a debt, a judgement and the outcome of conflict.
